We turn science into growth – about the position

Building on the DLF values the Head of Temperate, Winter-hardy Forages (TWHF), you will help implement a new phase of the DLF global R&D organisation, taking strategic responsibility for the breeding, development and delivery of Forage products across the relevant TWHF markets. This position reports to the VP Forages and is a member of the R&D Global Leadership Team, ensuring that R&D remains close to the business and continues to deliver superior products for DLF to remain highly competitive into the future.


The Head of TWHF, R&D is directly responsible for all R&D activities related to the delivery of Forage products to the Strategic Business Units temperate winter-hardy pasture forages that may be added to the DLF R&D portfolio. As member of the Global Leadership Team you will engage with commercial colleagues across all DLF markets to ensure a R&D pipeline is in place and that it delivers products meeting commercial requirements and on time. You also play a leading role in delivering new value-added traits in the respective markets.


You know how to deliver and develop – key responsibilities

  • Ensure high quality R&D pipelines are in place to deliver products meeting commercial requirements. 
  • Deliver products to meet SBU needs based on mutually agreed targets and timelines. 
  • Ensure delivery of appropriate quality data to support commercialisation decisions. 
  • Ensure the R&D organisation is closely integrated with the business
  • Identify and work with strategic partners where it can be demonstrated that they will strengthen our R&D programmes. 
  • Lead an R&D-wide focus on development and integration of disruptive technologies and tools.
  • Lead and develop staff including developing succession plans for TWHF R&D

You are professional and bring experience and people skills – candidate profile

  • Graduate degree (or PhD) in plant breeding, genetics, biology, physiology and/or statistics, with at least 10 years practical experience in Forage-related research.
  • Direct experience in identifying and developing new traits and bringing new products to market.
  • Demonstrated ability to design effective research programs, develop strategic visions and budgets for programs, set priorities, make and implement decisions and have proven ability to delegate.
  • Program development – ability to evolve research programs, effectively challenge the “status quo” and lead change processes, implementing modern approaches to increase impact and improve competitiveness.
  • Commercial acumen – demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with commercial teams, understand market requirements and match products to business opportunities.  Having the ability to identify new products and assist in commercialisation of products to market.
  • Strong listening and self-reflection skills, demonstrates a flexible leadership style, adjusts approach to the situation, comfortable in leading teams through ambiguity.
  • Motivational communication skills – knows how to communicate in a simple manner to staff and stakeholders. Communicates well at all levels of the organisation, and manages to stay constructive under pressure.
  • Ability to listen fully and carefully, analyse and assess situations quickly, and build productive relationships with a broad range of people to create common understanding.
  • Pro-active and positive problem solver. Strong analytical skills with a growth mindset and high intellectual curiosity.
  • Ability to learn and understand details pertaining to the organisation’s effective operation, while at the same time spotting opportunities for improvement of tools/processes and leading positive change.
