About the role
PGG Wrightson Seeds' is seeking an experienced Forage Agronomist to join their team in Ruakura, Waikato. This full-time role is responsible for providing expert agronomic advice and support to customers on a wide range of forage and pasture-related matters. As a key member of the team, you will play a vital role in helping farmers and growers across the region maximise the productivity and profitability of their forage and pasture-based operations.

The Forage Agronomist is an important position in our product development and breeding pipeline. The role is primarily field based and is responsible for planning, implementation and reporting Stage I, II and III forage trials, supporting breeding activities, statistical analysis and scientific report writing. This role is largely field based.

What you'll be doing

  • Assisting with forage breeding programs
  • General research farm activities (spraying, drilling, yielding etc.) 
  • Conducting field trials and demonstrations to showcase the latest pasture and forage technologies
  • Collaborating internally and externally to identify new business opportunities and support customer relationships
  • Preparing detailed reports and other communications to share agronomic insights and contribute to future directions
  • Staying up-to-date with industry trends, research and innovations
  • Representing the company at industry events, field days and other stakeholder engagements

 

What we're looking for

  • Tertiary qualification in agriculture, agronomy or a related discipline
  • An understanding of scientific research and principles
  • Experience with the use of statistical programs i.e. Genstat, R
  • Some experience as an agronomist, ideally within the farming, seeds or agricultural services industries would be beneficial
  • Comprehensive knowledge of forage and pasture species, agronomy, soil science and livestock production systems
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to translate technical information into practical advice 
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical and project management capabilities
  • A valid driver's licence and willingness to travel regularly within the Waikato region
  • Willingness to work outside and contribute to a small team environment
